GUTHRIE THEATER

MINNEAPOLIS, MN

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:

The Guthrie Theater is a 250,000 sf theater center located on the banks of the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis. The project included a 1,100 seat Thrust theater, a 700 seat Proscenium theater and a 250 seat studio theater. In addition, there is a restaurant, offices, production and rehearsal support spaces and educational classrooms. The project also included a parking ramp that holds 1,000 cars and connects by skywalk to the theater.

MAJOR CHALLENGE:

Major challenges included design and installation of the GFRG clouds that formed the ceilings for the Thrust and Proscenium theaters. Jim Gervais coordinated with an acoustical consultant (Talaske) and Architectural Alliance to match the exact location and angle the panels needed to be set for maximum audio performance. The panels were set to an x, y, z coordinate on a 3-D model provided by Talaske Group. Due to the shear size of the building and the aggressive schedule for completion, Olympic had over 80 trades people on the job during peak construction. This took an enormous amount of pre-planning with McGough and other trades by Jim Gauerke and Steve Hastay to keep the work flowing in a productive manner.
